If You’re Underperforming Right Now, It Might Not Be You

If You’re Underperforming Right Now, It Might Not Be You

Let me speak directly to you for a moment.

If you’re an executive who feels trained, stagnant, burned out, or quietly underperforming — not in a dramatic way, but in a persistent, wearing one — this is for you.

You’re still capable. Still smart. Still committed.

And yet something feels off.

You give a lot, but it costs more than it used to. You perform, but without the same clarity or satisfaction. You feel like you’re operating at 70–80% of yourself — and you don’t quite know why.

Here’s what I see again and again

When performance drops, most leaders assume the problem is them.

They work harder. They push through. They question their resilience, motivation, even their worth.

But in my experience, underperformance at this level is rarely about a lack of skill or ambition.

It’s about misalignment.

Specifically, a misalignment between:

  • The environment you’re in The culture, pace, leadership expectations, and unspoken rules you’re navigating every day.
  • How much you’re realistically willing — and able — to give Given your life stage, personal responsibilities, and nervous system capacity.
  • Your true capabilities Not just what you can do, but how you do your best, most natural work.

When these three drift out of sync, even the strongest executives begin to stall.

What misalignment feels like from the inside

It doesn’t usually show up as collapse.

It shows up as:

  • Mental fatigue that doesn’t go away with rest
  • Less patience, less curiosity, less strategic bandwidth
  • A sense of being constrained or underused — or overused
  • Doing the work, but no longer inhabiting it

You may even start to wonder: “Is this just how it is now?”

You don’t need to fix yourself

This is the part I want you to hear clearly.

You don’t need to become tougher, more disciplined, or more resilient.

You need realignment.

When I work with executives, we don’t start with performance goals. We start with clarity.

We slow down enough to explore:

  • What is this environment truly asking of you?
  • What are you no longer willing to give — and why?
  • Which of your strengths are being muted, stretched, or misused?
  • What signals has your body been sending that you’ve been overriding?

Often, performance improves not because you push harder — but because we remove the friction created by being in the wrong fit.

What my work as a coach is really about

I work with leaders who aren’t broken.

They’re out of alignment.

Together, we create a space where you can:

  • Think clearly again
  • Interrupt self-sabotaging patterns driven by pressure and fear
  • Reconnect with energy, not just output
  • Make conscious choices: adapt, renegotiate, redesign — or transition

When alignment returns, performance follows — quietly, sustainably, and without force.

A question for you

If something in you is tired, flat, or underperforming, ask yourself:

What part of me is no longer aligned with the environment I’m in?

That question — asked honestly — is often the beginning of your next chapter.
