There’s a moment in many professional lives when the question quietly changes.
It’s no longer: “Can I do this?”
But: “Is this where I do my best work?”
You’re competent. Experienced. Trusted.
And yet something feels slightly off.
Not wrong enough to leave. Not right enough to stay fully engaged.
That’s often the sign that you’re no longer operating in your sweet spot.

ToggleWhat your sweet spot really is
Your professional sweet spot sits at the intersection of three things:
- What you’re genuinely good at Not just skills on your CV — but strengths that feel natural and alive when you use them.
- What gives you energy The work that leaves you clearer, not depleted. Curious, not cynical.
- What the environment actually needs and values. Where your contribution is recognised, welcomed, and allowed to make an impact.
When these align, performance feels lighter. You still work hard — but it doesn’t drain you in the same way.
When they don’t, even success starts to feel heavy.
Why people miss their sweet spot
Most professionals don’t drift away from their sweet spot because they’re careless.
They drift because they’re responsible.
They say yes to opportunities. They adapt to changing demands. They grow into roles that are needed — not necessarily roles that fit.
Over time, they become very good at work that costs them more than it gives back.
And because they’re still performing, no one — including them — questions it.
The cost of staying out of alignment
Operating outside your sweet spot doesn’t usually show up as immediate burnout.
It shows up as:
- chronic tiredness that rest doesn’t fix
- loss of strategic clarity or creativity
- over-functioning paired with under-fulfilment
- a quiet sense of “I’m capable of more — just not like this”
You’re not broken. You’re misaligned.
Finding your sweet spot isn’t about doing less
It’s about doing what fits.
In my work as a coach, I help professionals step back and look at their work through a different lens:
- Where are you overextending a strength until it becomes a liability?
- Where are you underusing talents that matter deeply to you?
- What kind of environment allows you to thrive — not just survive?
- What would “success” look like if it were also sustainable?
Very often, the answer isn’t a dramatic career change.
It’s a recalibration. A redesign. A conscious choice about where — and how — to invest your energy.
Why this matters now
The world of work doesn’t need more exhausted high performers.
It needs people operating from clarity, alignment, and self-trust.
Your sweet spot isn’t a luxury. It’s where your best contribution lives.
